Treatment for Scoliosis and Kyphosis
January 28, 2011 by Kimberly
In November, 2010 I attended a two week intensive physical therapy course for the treatment of scoliosis and kyphosis. The course, 3-D Treatment of Scoliosis from the Barcelona Scoliosis Physiotherapy School (BSPTS), was taught by Beth Janssen, P.T. and Patti Orthwein, P.T. at their practice in Wisconsin. Our group of ten physical therapists was the first class to be certified in the United States; up until this past year training in BSPTS method had only been available in Spain.
I was especially inspired by the stories of four young girls who traveled to the Wisconsin clinic from Long Island, New York. The girls were taught how to manage their scoliosis using specific therapeutic exercises, targeted breathing and muscle activation techniques. Each girl went home with an custom exercise program to improve her posture and spinal alignment. This treatment method provides a non-surgical option for those diagnosed with scoliosis, and I am excited to offer this program for children and adults.
